Kulbardi Mia

Central Midlands Senior High School is an inclusive school that embraces all diversities and abilities. We pride ourselves in constructing and developing the necessary individual programs to suit students’ disabilities and needs. Our main priority is to encourage and support the emotional development of students, giving them the tools to meet challenges they may face in this complicated and changing world. In our space we believe that nurturing the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of students will enable them to obtain the essential skills needed to become independent adults.

In Kulbardi Mia all our staff work together to provide the most comprehensive programs and assistance for all students. Our staff are trained in specialist areas, so that they can provide the highest quality education and care to all students.

Students are engaged in learning in a supportive small class environment with easy access to purpose build amenities, showering facilities and a therapy activity area.  Our students also engage in integrated into learning areas, based on their individual development needs and we work with parents to design their pathway models.

We offer an independent living program, where our team work alongside ILUKA to enable students’ daily opportunities to build skills that they will need to become more independent as they start to become young adults. This is a hands-on program that aims to set the students up for their future and give them the ability to function as independently as possible as they become young adults, offering shopping, cooking and planning experiences. This is a hands-on program that aims to set the students up for their future and give them the ability to function as independently as possible as they become young adults.

We create individual plans for all core subjects’ areas which cater to individual student’s needs & abilities. We also run the ASDAN Program within the classroom. We have set times daily to complete our ASDAN modules. The courses are picked for students depending on their individual needs. We offer the Keys, Steps, and Towards Independence, in addition to a suite of short courses which focus on skill development across a range of topics and curriculum areas. Short courses are widely used in formal and non-formal settings by 13 – 19 year olds and are multi-level with the focus is on completing challenges and skills development according to individual ability. Learners’ complete challenges and collate the work they produce in a portfolio of evidence.

We have daily jobs which focus on independent life skills. Other skills we incorporate into our programs are:

  • Meal planning, budgeting, and buying food.
  • Cooking and understanding healthy eating.
  • Being responsible for their routine, like setting alarms and going to school or work.
  • Personal hygiene & healthy living.
  • Washing, cleaning & other relevant household jobs.

Literacy and Numeracy are highly valued and important components of our program. In our Kulbardi Mia, we complete one hour literacy and one hour Numeracy blocks each day which align with their Special Educational Needs (SEN) plans.

We also use interactive and online programs, to enable development of independence and explore the everchanging IT world. Students have access to work on laptops or iPads, as we strive to develop word processing and IT skills. We use information technology to engage and motivate students with colour and sound, in an interactive nature.

We deliver Science, Health, and HASS (History and Geography) lessons throughout the week and deliver a weekly Science lesson to cover all the domains. Students have the opportunity to engage in the investigation process and develop their questioning skills through experiments. We also deliver a weekly Health lesson and Arts program.

Our Year 11 and 12 students are offered the opportunity to complete one of the ASDAN Courses, participate in SIDE subjects or other mainstream courses. Some of the courses available include: Land Based/Construction courses, Hair/Beauty, and Office skills options.

At Central Midlands Senior High School, we pride ourselves in supporting our students to have successful futures equipped with the necessary skills to move into the next chapter of their lives, after school.

Art and Music are also key aspects of our program. These facets are both important for our students as it gives them the opportunity to explore themselves and express who they are in different ways, rather than just using oral /written language. We have a 1 hour session of Art per week and a 1 hour session of music.

We use Information Technology as much as we can to engage and motivate the students through colour, sound and its interactive nature. We use a variety of online programs to support the use of technology and its ability to cater to individual students and their needs. It allows us to set specific and relevant tasks according to the student’s individual abilities. The use of technology in Special Needs Education helps break the barriers for people with disabilities and can provide them with access to the most relevant educational programs and information.

Here at Central Midlands Senior High School we pride ourselves in supporting our students to become independent adults. We want them to be equipped with the necessary skills to move into the next chapter of their lives, once they have left school.
